25 Reasons Why Your Email List is more effective than Social Media
If your business is interested in digital marketing, one thing you will be told is that social media is the best way to be able to promote your company. That through Twitter, Facebook, and other outlets you can have the best success of reaching customers and potential customers so that they can learn about sales, promotions, or other events you may be having.
In this video clip, Graham Cochrane explains – Why Email Is More Important Than Social Media
This may seem logical, but the truth is that your own email list may be a more effective tool. The list that you have generated is actually the best thing to have in your promotional arsenal, far ahead of social media. Here are 25 reasons to explain why.
1. People Pay More Attention
Tweets and Facebook messages just fly by users, especially if they are following lots of different people’s accounts. A study found that the average tweet is viewed for less than two seconds, meaning that if a person spent 10 seconds looking at just one tweet, four others were completely ignored. That doesn’t really help your ability to reach consumers.
2. Doesn’t Cost You Anything
If you really want more engagement with consumers using social media, you are going to have to pay to have your advertisements appear in a more prominent position and for a longer period of time. Meanwhile, sending out emails costs you nothing at all. It’s a huge advantage that an email list gives you.
3. Greater Control Over Who Sees the Promotion
When you send out a message using social media, you don’t even know if it really is reaching potential customers. You could be delivering a message to somebody 10,000 miles away, and that’s not really doing you any good. Email allows you to reach people who are interested in your business because they have already provided you their email.
4. Greater Control Over What They See
By creating an email and sending it to customers, you will ensure that the information they see is exactly what appears in the email. This makes sure that your content is perfect every time, and not subject to a number of characters or a design by the social media outlet.
5. You Avoid the Bad
Consider that when you post a message on social media that this gives people the ability to comment on the promotion or sale you were offering. These comments may be negative, they may be nothing more than somebody putting down that they dislike it, but that can be a negative influence on those who may want to purchase from your business.
6. Is Much More Personal
A big advantage that email offers is that it is personal. You are greeting the individual person through the email, it is coming directly to them, and they feel like you are making a connection. You can’t really do any of that was social media.
7. Add a Lot More Detail
In an email message, you can be a lot more detailed in terms of the information you want to provide. In most social media platforms you are limited to a certain number of characters, but none of that is true in the case of email messages.
8. You Can Be More Selective on Who Gets a Message
An email list also gives you the opportunity to reach certain people about specials you are having. You may want to offer a special sale, and this is much easier to accommodate using an email list.
9. People Like Email More
Whether social media giants like to hear this or not, the truth is people prefer email for promotional messages. They like the fact that they get a more detailed message, which is more personalized and gives them a greater ability to read at their leisure.
10. You Can See Who Has Viewed
Sending an email gives you the ability to see who read your messages. While you may get a number with a social media tweet or Facebook message, you don’t know specifically who saw that. This is a big advantage of the email list.
11. You Can Tell What They Viewed from the Email
Not only are you able to see that a recipient reviewed the email, but you can also tell what links they clicked on from the email. This lets you know if they downloaded coupons, viewed specific sale items and the like.
12. You Can Answer Complex Questions
Some products are hard to explain how to use in a 288 character message. You can make sure that you can answer questions that consumers have a product, making it more likely that they will be to buy it.
13. You Can Answer Legal Questions
It seems that every product these days comes with a legal disclaimer to it and, if you are faced with this kind of necessity, these things are much easier to answer in an email. You can be quite specific, where social media messages don’t allow that.
14. Email Addresses Are Easier to Get
The truth is that the vast majority of people give away their email address all the time, primarily because it is one of the more common pieces of personal information they remember. Not everyone exactly remembers their Twitter handle or Facebook account name, and so asking for an email address will actually be a lot easier to get.
15. More People Are Familiar with Email
Sadly, by using social media, promotions you are likely to cut out at least 50% of those who are over 40 years old. Practically everyone uses email, but that is not true of social media. In fact, 81% of people over 55 use an email, but less than 2% use social media.
16. Everyone Uses Email
While a large number of people do not use social media, everyone uses email. One of the big advantages of it is you can be sure that everyone can provide you with an email address. That isn’t true in social media accounts.
17. The Email List Is Yours
The great part about an email list is that it is your list. You don’t have to worry about Twitter or Facebook banning someone’s account, or the social media giant banning yours. You own your email list. You simply can’t beat that.
18. People Admit They Like Email
We mentioned this before but in a slightly different way. So, it is important to accept this. Better than 75% of people say that they prefer to receive their messages from email. It is not just an issue of coupons being easier to read or getting more information. They simply like email, and you must tap into that affinity.
19. Emails Allow You to Engage
What it is often forgotten about email, is that the person is able to respond. If they have a question about what they have read they can directly contact you, giving you the opportunity to sell your product through a direct message to them.
20. Emails Seem More Important
A study in 2017 found that people take emails far more seriously than they do tweets and messages. Even if your information in your email is no different than what you are providing in your social media account, they will take it more seriously.
21. Make It Easier to Reach Their Friends
If you send someone an email and they find that the product is perfect for a friend, they are likely to forward that email on. That gives you the ability to potentially double, triple, or even exponentially increase the number of people who read your message. Most people will read an email from someone they know, so you are greatly increasing the chances of reaching consumers using an email list.
22. Make It Easy to Opt in or Out
An email list makes it easy for a person to decide they don’t want to receive messages any longer. By purchasing advertising on a social media platform, they are forced to view your ads, which they may not like. Giving them an option to get out of your emails really helps them feel more in control.
23. The Number of Potential Subscribers are Endless
They say that about a billion people use Facebook. About half of that number uses Twitter and there is a lot of overlap. However, there are nearly three billion people using email. Sounds like reason enough to jump on the email list on that alone.
24. People Spend Far More Time in Their Email
While it is true that people spend a lot of time talking to friends on Facebook through the messenger, they spend far more time on their individual messages. That means that it is far more likely they are viewing your email than they are your Tweet.
25. People Are Not Going to Stop Using Email
There are plenty of people who are dropping their social media accounts over privacy issues, but email is here to stay. You can be sure you are going to reach people with these lists, as an email address is almost always forever. Ask someone who still has an AOL account.
If you want more engagement, it truly makes sense to look to an email list. To do otherwise just does not make sense.
